What's the best shelf-size stereo?

I'm looking for a good shelf stereo unit, preferably in the under-$150 price range. Required characteristics: CD player (obviously), good bass sound, aux input or some other means of hooking up an iPod, AM/FM receiver.

That in mind, what are your favorite units, and what do you think would get me the most bang for my buck? Thanks!
Note: If you don't think I can get such a unit for under $150, tell me so, and rec me your favorite model regardless of price.
One more note - I'm not looking for good bass so that I have a good thump for percussive rock music. I listen primarily to orchestral music. Unfortunately, it's very easy for the bottom to drop out of music like this unless the speakers have really good bass support.

You do have a few options, but with the vast majority of audio electronics, you really do get what you pay for (especially for someone listening to orchestral/classical which can be very demanding to render properly).

That being said... Why do you want the shelf system? Is it for a dorm room, just something for your bedroom, or do you just want to devote limited funds to it right now? Do you have a computer? And if so, is it in the same area?

Also, exactly what type of area are you trying to cover? Shelf systems can range from mini types (approx 6"x12") to full blown box styles (in the 18"x36" range).

If you do have a computer, and it is in a common area, your best bet would be to invest in a quality set of powered speakers. A computer will handle most all the functions of a stereo (with the exception of radio, but that can be handled by an add-in card), most modern desktop systems even have 5.1 channel or better outputs (Dolby Digital Surround).

Many higher-end computer speaker systems have remote controls as well, so you aren't necessarily stuck in front of your comp to change volume, etc.

I have always liked JVC's smaller systems. I have one that I bought 10+ years ago that is still a very nice one, and has good sound. I am a bit of an audiophile myself, and listen to everything from classical orchestral to hard rock/metal.

Although it is a bit above your stated price range ($199) Crutchfield has an awesome deal on a JVC mini system that will also play DVD video and audio. Moving to a decentralized living space, you may like the integrated DVD function especially if you have TV's in your bedroom and living room. Also, if you have never experienced DVD Audio, the sound is amazing vs. CD's.
