Plasma HDTV as a computer monitor?

I'd like to connect my desktop to my Plasma HDTV and use it as a monitor (the main purpose is to watch streaming videos). There's no HDMI or DVI output from my HP desktop, only VGA. But VGA image quality is not that good plus it doesn't carry sound.

What cable/converter should i use to get the best image quality out of this situation?
How should i go about to get sound? Do i have to purchase a special cable to carry sound or speaker system or something?

My tower is a HP Pavilion a747c (pretty old, 5 years i think)

I used to have a Dell XPS laptop (in 2008) and connected to my Plasma HDTV via a high quality HDMI cable, I had it at the maximum resolution (1920 x 1080) and to tell you the truth it looked really bad.
