What's the difference between plasma and LCD TVs?

My husband and I were looking at purchasing a new tv and saw plasma and LCD TVs. I would like to know what are the differences and pros and cons of each. Also, on the labels were information 720p and 1080p. What does that mean and is it important to consider? if so, why?

Plasma tvs are normally larger sizes, heavier, and a slightly more vibrant picture. They work with a plasma in the screen. This is why its so heavy, and they have a shorter life before the screen dies. LCDs are a little lighter, and have a longer screen life. The picture is often not as good, although the standard has improved. The 720p and 1080p are indications of HD readiness. Technically, the 1080p TV will produce a more detailed picture than the 720p, but it is not a huge difference. Its only important to consider this if you are using HD equipment and have a very, VERY sharp eye. Hope this helped!
