How was broadway discriminatory toward blacks in the 40s and 50s?

The 40s is a little before my time. I was born in 1948. Can't say I know much about Broadway either. I was a black and white TV kid growing up in the 50s. People tried to keep blacks out, but it was a losing cause. Entertainment and sports got blown away by the time I was old enough to notice.
Sure I remember discrimination, but discrimination in entertainment and sports went out early.
