Need some help refinishing an antique dresser!?
I have a lovely french provincial style dresser that is about 30 years old, and I am wanting to refinish it. Right now it has a cherry veneer on top of solid wood. The veneer is chipping off of the top, and I am not sure how to remove the veneer without a major project. I
I want to simply paint the whole dresser an antique black, so I basically need some way for the paint to adhere to the surface because the veneer is pretty slick in spots.
Any help or advise would be appreciated, or if any one has had an experience with this kind of finish.
Thanks Cheezy! The only concern I have about the sandpaper and primer is the veneer treatment used on the dresser. I have a feeling if I dont remove that treatment the paint will bubble up. I wasnt sure if I needed to sand the whole treatment off first. Trust me I'd love to prime and paint, and I'll more than likely use your advise. Thanks again!

Any refinishing would most probably destroy it value.
However, 30 years old is not "antique"
The traditional definition of Antique has been applied to anything made before "1830" or an item that's at least 100 years old. However, since the 1980's some people have come to define antiques as "anything made before the outbreak of the 2nd World War i.e pre 1940.
For this item, use Cheezies idea.
The dresser will never have much value left however.
